A Rare Indian Colonial Silver Owl Pepper by Charles (Pittar), Nephew & Co. of Calcutta, ca. 1855

An Indian Colonial Silver Owl pepper with glass eyes. c.1850

Description

A silver pepper in the form of a standing owl with wings folded and glass eyes.

The head, is removable and a simple push-fit, it is carefully pierced consistent with the feather pattern adorning the wings and body.

The pepper is made of a good gauge of silver.

Marks:

The maker’s mark is  “C.N & Co”, accompanied by a Lion Passant and the letter ‘A’, (all in rectangular punches with clipped corners), followed by a tally mark, these are struck on the outer face of the neck rim which inserts into the body:

The maker’s mark is for Charles, Nephew & Co. of Old Court House Street, Calcutta. In 1848 the firm succeed Pittar & Co, founded by Charles John Pittar and Parke Pittar II, Uncle and Nephew, hence the name of the business, and Thomas Powell who ceases to be a partner in 1853.
