A Rare Raj Silver Kashmir Bird Pepper, Srinagar, ca. 1880

A silver pepper in the form of a standing hawk-like bird, with garnet eyes and typical Kashmiri style decoration.

 

Description

A silver pepper in the form of a standing hawk-like bird, with curved beak, folded wings and square-cut garnet eyes. The head, which is removable and a simple push-fit, is carefully pierced to match the feather pattern adorning the wings and body.  The decoration is of typical Kashmiri style, with chinar leaves on the back and underbelly.  The pepper is made of a good gauge of silver.  There is no maker’s mark.
