A Chinese Export Silver Lidded Goblet by Houchong of Canton, ca. 1820

 

A circular, half-pint silver goblet, with everted lip and collet foot. It has a removable lid with a finial in the form of sphere on a collar, decorated with stylized acanthus leaves.

Description

A circular, half-pint silver goblet, with everted lip and collet foot. It has a removable lid with a finial in the form of sphere on a collar, decorated with stylized acanthus leaves. The goblet sides, foot and lid are chased with foliate decoration, that on the sides in four oval panels and that on the foot and lid in a single band. The goblet and lid are made of silver testing at about 900 parts per thousand and mercury gilded on their interior surfaces; the goblet is struck with an identifying maker’s mark.

A monogram beneath a scroll is engraved just below the lip on one side of the goblet and the monogram alone is engraved on the lid (as shown below); in addition, an inscription in Gujarati script is engraved on the opposite side of the goblet body and also on the lid (also shown below):

Maker’s Marks

The maker’s mark: ‘HCG’ in a rectangular punch, for Houchong (Canton ca. 1820-1835), appears on the rim of the goblet’s collet foot.
